Badgers 4 v 0 Nuneaton Badgers

Scorers: Ashton Azzopardi (3), Leah Azzopardi
Player of the Match Charlie Blood
Adders Badgers new look squads played host to Nuneaton Badgers in a pre-league season friendly. Badgers Green squad played first with many playing their first ever Badgers match representing the club on a Saturday. Their preparation matches and training paid off as they confidently approached the game. Jack Hobbs and Mimi Currie up front worried the Nuneaton defence as they pressured every ball. Thomas Gardner and Ellen Simmons were outstanding in defence making some well timed key tackles, Amreen Kaur in midfield marked excellently and Joseph Callery linked well to produce some great attacking moves from midfield. The breakthrough finally came as Leah Azzopardi broke down the right wing to shoot and score from a tight angle to beat the keeper.
Half time 1:0 ahead and the Badgers Orange team took to the pitch.
The second half saw the more experienced Adders Badgers take to the pitch joined this time by newcomer Ashton Azzopardi in his first competitive Saturday game. What a debut as he outshone his older sister with a fantastic hat trick in just 35 minutes of hockey! Great credit to all his team mates but in particular Bradley Wakefield-Davy who selflessly passed the ball to Ashton to beat the keeper and secure the overall win 4:0.
Other great Badgers debuts from Emily Bewsher in midfield and Henry Shepherd in goal who, with his fellow keeper Harriet Townsend, managed to keep a clean sheet despite much pressure from the Nuneaton attack.
A big 'thank you' to all the supporters and coaches who helped and to Ellis Brown and Leah Azzopardi for mentoring and helping both teams on the day. The game was played in a very sporting and competitive way so a final 'thank you' to Nuneaton who we look forward to playing in the upcoming league season. It was a great introduction to Badgers Hockey for many players at both clubs.
