North Notts 0 v 3 Mens 1sts

Scorers: B.Matthews, S.Hirons, C.Currie

Atherstone Mens 1sts began their 2019-20 season with a well deserved victory against a strong North Notts side. Goals came from Ben Matthews, Chris Currie and Sean Hirons in this pre-league season friendly as the Adders continued their good form from last season. Following last seasons amazing 100% record, the Adders wanted to test themselves against quality opposition in a series of pre-league season matches and North Notts were exactly the kind of quality opposition that they were seeking. They have just been promoted out of the league that the Adders will now be playing in and so a tough match was on the cards. Coach, Martin Webb and Manager, Mick Thomas were looking for a good team performance and some stand out performances from the team regulars. In fact, it was the young team newcomers who stood out most of all in an excellent team performance.
With triple Curries in the side - 18 year old Chris, and debutants 14 year old Will and 15 year old Robert, the Adders looked like they would be physically overshadowed by their opposition however nothing could be further from the truth. Both Will and Robert quickly learned how to get the better of their marker and Chris used his speed to leave his marker in his wake.
North Notts pressed hard for the first ten minutes of the game but the Adders slowly gained the upper hand and opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a Ben Matthews deflection from a well worked penalty corner routine.
In the second half Chris Currie picked up a rebound from the North Notts keeper to scramble the Adders second goal and then Sean Hirons put the icing on the cake as he sealed the game with a fine effort with 10 minutes to go.
The Adders defenders were solid and dominant throughout the game leaving keeper, Will Parsons little to do.
Coach and Manager will be pleased with overall performance and result against a very tough team and they will be particularly pleased with the way that the newcomers performed.
