Ashby 3rds 2 v 4 Mens 3rds

Scorers: Riccardo Tomassoni, Will Currie, Kevin Guest, Lee Smith
Player of the Match: Will Currie
Donkey of the Day: Riccardo Tomassoni

Atherstone produced one of the best performances of the season to beat a youthful Ashby side away at Ivanhoe. Four different goalscorers including debutant Will Currie found the net, with the more experienced Adders defence conceding only two.

The Adders were missing key players including Negus, Oldham and most of all Woodhead, and it looked as though Ashby would profit as Ashby took the lead inside 10 minutes. Steve Labram pulled off an incredible low save to keep the initial shot out, but could do nothing to stop the follow-up from rattling the backboard. The 3rds then burst into life in the spring sunshine with a cutting pass from Rory Kobrin allowing Riccardo to tip the ball past the Ashby keeper.
With scores level, the Adders piled on the pressure and won a short corner late on in the first half. Kevin Guest selflessly slipped it to Will Currie who passed it into the goal to bag his first senior goal on his debut. So Atherstone went into the break with a narrow lead, but they knew it would require a good second half to preserve it.
Ashby started the second period on the front foot and looked to get themselves back in the game. They kept the ball for long phases of the game and aimed to press their advantage. But against the run of play in the second half, Atherstone won a corner. Kevin decided not to pass this time and struck it well into the back of the net.
The new-look back four of Guest, Wheeler, Ford and Parsons were in control right up until Ashby nicked a goal back, leaving the match finely poised at 3-2. But from then on Atherstone were in complete control; Lee Smith put away Atherstone’s fourth and could’ve had another as he flicked one with his reverse stick over the Ashby goalie. Thankfully it his the bar else Lee would be living off it for the rest of the season.
The Adders could’ve scored more but Riccardo kept the scoreline at a respectable level by putting a few good chances wide. Therefore he took the Dick of the Day award, and Will Currie was given Man of the Match after a superb performance, especially considering it was his first match. He certainly didn’t show it and is an incredible prospect for the (near) future.
Next up is Daventry at QE, another winnable game particularly if we keep up the recent good form.
